Obama Could Say—“So What If I Am A Muslim?”
A rumor is going around that Senator Barack Obama is a Muslim.
This rumor is false.
Here is what Senator Obama has said in denying the rumor—
“I’ve been a member of the same church for nearly 20 years, praying to Jesus with my Bible,” Obama told 1,200 people at a church-run community center in Sumter. “Don’t let people turn you around because they’re just making stuff up. That’s what they do, they try to bamboozle you.”
Fine.
What I’ve not heard Senator Obama say is, “I’m not Muslim, but so what if I was?”
Being Islamic is good enough for hundreds of millions of people.
So why not just say–“I’m not Muslim, but it would not matter if I were.”
And as Senator Obama, who is the favored candidate of this blog, makes an effort to win black voters in South Carolina, he uses a word–bamboozle– that Malcolm X had been know to use.
As in this example from Malcolm X—
“You’ve been hoodwinked. You’ve been had. You’ve been took. You’ve been led astray, led amok. You’ve been bamboozled.”
Mr. Obama is paraphrasing Malcolm X to deny he is Muslim, and not saying anything, as far as I know, about how it would make no difference if he were in fact Islamic.
This does not seem like leadership from Senator Obama.

Welcome To Texas Liberal
Texas Liberal is a blog of politics and political history.
My name is Neil Aquino. Here is my profile.
I can be reached at naa618@att.net.
Additional focuses of the blog are books, art, poetry, personal relationships and, also, sea life and marine mammals.
( The picture above is of the Houston Ship Channel. A narrow channel can lead to a wide sea.)
The signature post of this blog is the Martin Luther King Reading & Reference List. This list is the best of it’s kind on the web.
Another good post is my reciting the words to the Shaker hymn Simple Gifts on Galveston Island, Texas as a ship passes behind.
I live in Houston, Texas and I do sometimes write about political issues in Houston and in Texas.
I also often write about my former hometown of Cincinnati, and about the great beach city of Galveston, Texas.
I define liberalism as a role for government in the economy to help make life more fair, and a broad acceptance of people regardless of who they are.
This is why it says “All People Matter” at the top of the blog.
A blog grows one reader at a time. If you like what you read here, please consider forwarding the link.
Texas Liberal began regular posting on July 25, 2006.
I also blog at the Houston Chronicle as one of eight featured political bloggers, and on Where’s The Outrage? which posts out of North Carolina.
Thanks for reading Texas Liberal.

What religion are all the terrorists? Why does the Koran teach that Jews & Christians should be killed if they do not convert to Islam? Read the Koran if you do not believe it! A Muslim president would open the immigration flood gates to Muslims. Look at what happens: riots in France, riots in Australia, Sharia law imposed, “no-go” zones in Europe for non-Muslims, etc.
Comment by Bob Allen | January 25, 2008
If you think just Islamic people are doing bad things in the world, you are mistaken.

OBAMA IS SO BUSY ATTACKING HILLARY, HE NEVER TALKS ABOUT THE ISSUES. THIS NEEDS TO STOP NOW. OUR COUNTRY IS AT A VERY SERIOUS CROSSROADS. THE RULES OF THE DEBATES SHOULD BE THAT THE DISCUSSIONS SHOULD ONLY BE ABOUT THE ISSUES FACING AMERICANS. SO FAR A HAVENT HEARD ONE THING ABOUT OBAMAS GIFTS TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. ONLY THING IVE HEARD THAT HE WORKS HAND IN HAND WITH A SLUMLORD WHO TAKES ADVANTAGE OF PEOPLE. HE CLAIMS HE DOES NOT TAKE $$$ FROM LOBBYIST YET HE HAS NOW EXCEPTED MORE $$$ FROM THE DRUG COMPANIES THAN ANY OF THE OTHER CANDIDATES. HE IS NOT A RELATIVE OF THE BLACK SLAVES, WHO WERE TORTURED BY THEIR MASTERS, SO HOW COULD HE BE A BROTHER????? BEFORE YOU TOMARROW SC, YOU NEED TO DO SOME SOUL SEARCHING AND THINK BEFORE YOU VOTE. HILLARY IS THE BEST CANDIDATE. SHE WILL BE READY TO WORK FROM DAY ONE.
GO HILLARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No American Muslim will vote for Obama. Besides his standing in the Muslim world will be worse than Bush as they will prefer a Jew, Christian than one who had changed his religion from Islam.
Comment by ismail | January 28, 2008
Texas Liberal, And you call this NEWS?? I am appalled at you, your article and the accompanying photo of a Muslim scene. It is people like you who poison people’s views. What are you saying, that since Mr. Obama has not said what “YOU” WANT HIM TO SAY, then he must be a Muslim? Mr. Obama is a dedicated and devoted CHRISTIAN who believes in and praises our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He has made this very clear. Articles like this with all the trimmings constitue slander of the worst kind. Shame on you! And just so you don’t come back and say I didn’t say he isn’t a Muslim…here, I’ll say it, loudly and clearly: MR OBAMA IS NOT A MUSLIM, PERIOD!!!
Thank you for saying he is not a muslim, tho.
You remind of my sister, she gives you a compliment and then follows up with a negative on the same issue. That is exactly what you have done. What a shame!!
Comment by NinaK | January 28, 2008
Continued: I notice your subheading: “ALL PEOPLE MATTER”
Your article and accompanying photo contradict that heading. Guess Mr. Obama does not matter to you.
Comment by NinaK | January 28, 2008
Neil: Leonard Pitts is copying you. (I think that Pitts is the best syndicated columnist around.)
Even if Obama were a Muslim, so what?
Leonard Pitts, McClatchy Tribune Newspapers
Barack Obama is not a Muslim.
We know this because he has told us so.
We know it because there is no credible evidence to suggest otherwise.
We know it despite a campaign of lies and whispers from various bloggers, pundits and head cases.
Barack Obama is not a Muslim. But what if he were?
Same guy, same charisma, same inspirational idealism. But also, a Muslim. Not a crazy Muslim. Not a guy prone to strapping bombs to his chest in hopes of meeting virgins in heaven. A Kareem Abdul-Jabbar-type Muslim. A Dave Chappelle, Ahmad Rashad, Shaquille O’Neal-type Muslim. A guy you like and admire who just happened to be, you know, Muslim.
Would it matter? Should it?
The question bears answering because of the creepy, are-you-now-or-have-you-ever-been attitude toward Islam that seems to be seeping into the public dialogue lately. As in that campaign of lies and whispers that keeps showing up in my inbox — claims that Obama won’t salute the flag, took his oath of office on a Quran, belongs to a terror cell and other assorted idiocy.

Julie–Great to have you here and thanks for this comment that adds well to the post.
Maybe he is copying me–You never know. But likely not.
Comment by Neil Aquino | January 30, 2008
Great point, Neil. 1) I agree…he should be able to state what he is and what he believes and at the same time explicitly say “and so what if I was Muslim?!”. unfortunately we live in a time and place where there is so much hostility and MIS-information about Islam and Muslims – hence he neglected to acknowledge the issue of being Muslim being equated with negativity. 2) and YES, I agree, he IS most-definitely a brother! 3) and YES i agree he was paraphrasing malcolm X (peace be upon him) in his well-known, popularly recognized use of the term “bamboozled”.
peace & progress!

Comment by Neil Aquino | January 31, 2008
Hey Neil Aquino here’s a question. ARE YOU A MUSLIM?
Because Neil you sure seem to care an awful lot about what should be a trivial matter to you…unless you are a Muslim.
Isn’t the point that certain people (Hillary campaign) want to keep spreading rumors and falsehoods and that Senator Obama has unequivocally refuted these falsehoods and stated the TRUTH?
When falsehoods are being spread the truth will set you free Neil!
Your criticism of Senator Obama’s clearcut statement of truth is one of the dumbest commentaries I’ve heard this political season (and that’s saying alot).
SO Neil Aquino are you really that dumb or are you doing dirty work on behalf of the Hillary campaign? Or both?
Comment by Averroes | February 21, 2008
I think clicking to the home of the blog will suggest I’m not working for Mrs. Clinton. Thanks for the comment.
Comment by Neil Aquino | February 21, 2008
“Why does the Koran teach that Jews & Christians should be killed if they do not convert to Islam? Read the Koran if you do not believe it!”
The Koran says this:
“Sura 2:62 “Lo! those who believe, and those who are Jews, and Christians, and Sabaeans –whoever believes in God and the Last day, and does right –surely their reward is with their Lord, and there shall no fear come upon them, neither shall they greive.””
Comment by Norwegian Student | May 29, 2008
Yeah—What about all the crimes done in the name of the Bible? And in the name of all sorts of beliefs? Easy to sit in some remote place like Norway and disapprove of people. Muslim folks want no more or less trouble than anybody else.

Comment by austin4hillary | June 1, 2008
Hi I am from South Africa and I just managed to stumble upon this blog.I really think Obama will bring change to your country and to the world and also how the world percieves americans at present.Come on lets face it you guys are the most hated country in the world at present, it is not my personal feeling towards americans but bush has really screwed up your country with his war.It is time for change and believe me that change will be positive with Obama.Economies are bad accross the world and it is all thanks to war no matter who is at war, so I think he can do it.Give him a chance. Our country is also in trouble where leaders are concerned but we are the people that put them there and they should listen to us as a people.
