Please Stop Littering In Tony Marron Park In Houston—How About Some Self-Respect For Ourselves As Everyday People?

May I please ask people to stop littering Tony Marron Park in Houston.

It is a nice park. Why would anybody litter in a nice park that is for all the people?

What is wrong with people?

How we conduct ourselves in a park that belongs to all the people is a measure of self-respect.

We’ve got to respect ourselves as everyday people using the common resources.

  1. Some people just don’t give a damn, and they litter all over the place. When people have an incentive to clean it up, they do.

  2. Being a citizen in a society should be incentive enough.

  3. It would be wonderful if that were true. In that idyllic world, we wouldn’t need law at all. Being a citizen in a society would be incentive enough for people not to litter, or murder, or do other nasty things.

But we’re constrained by reality. We’re in a fallen world where human nature and incentives do matter. When the benefits of doing something exceed the actor’s costs, you’ll get more of that thing (littering.) When the costs of doing something exceed the benefits to the actor, you’ll get less of that thing (keeping the soccer goals maintained.)

Trying to change this basic fact of human behavior is like trying to rewrite the law of gravity. We have to act within our constraints.
