Masked Olympians Looking Out For Number One

This masked woman is one of the U.S. Olympic cyclists who wore a mask to protect herself from bad air in Beijing.

Will she or any of her teammates speak up for human rights in China?

Don’t hold your breath.

So what if a billion Chinese are not free? This woman does not want to breathe bad air. That’s what important.

Here is the Human Rights Watch report on freedom in China in the context of the Olympics.

  1. The mask might help filter particulate matter in the air but it will not do anything for polluting gases.

  2. Nope–It would not.

  3. I think that the athletes could care deeply about the rights of the chinese as much as anybody else but why should they take their eye off the prize that they have trained their whole lives for because the olympics are being held in some fucked up country that has been formed by american consumption? why should they have to voice anything other than they are there to win for the countries. the people of this country should speak up and vote and demand change. we will not because we want cheap gas and hooters and fucking bud light. we want winners, cheap everything, big cars, not all but the majority. I am not in the majority.

  4. Bill–You have many good points here. Still one of them could say something. We’ll see what happens in the last week of the Olympics.

  5. I think it would be like you saying republicans suck or wearing a tshirt that said that in the bookstore you work in. its hard to taint you team and country when you are trying to reach your lifes goal of winning an olympic event. I think when its over you will hear from all kinds of athletes on the conditions of the people. the air quality the direct impact the worlds consumption has done to drive this country into a human rights nightmare and eco disaster. overall i hate sports and would never drive my child to want nothing but olympic gold but i will not knock those that do. they are very dedicated almost to a fault.
