Berlin ’36, Moscow ’80, Beijing ’08—Olympics Again In Dictatorship

It’s just over a year until the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. These Olympics, like the 1936 games in Berlin and the 1980 games in Moscow, will be held in a dictatorship.

After the invasion of Afghanistan, President Jimmy Carter ordered a boycott of the Moscow Olympics. While it’s not on the table for 2008, I’d support the same step for America regarding the Beijing games.

The government of China denies political, religious and other freedoms to over a billion people.

A new book entitled Nazi Games—The Olympics of 1936 by David Clay Large says the German government made significant propaganda gains by holding the Olympics.

Why is the brutal Chinese government being given this same opportunity?

  1. Why? $$$$$$

This is what is confusing about US Foreign Policy (doesn’t matter which party is in power). Our leaders wax poetic about freedom and opposing those regimes around the world which stifle it, YET our friends in the Far East are given a free pa$$.

  2. Money? It has something to do with money? That can’t be. China is a Communist utopia and America is the moral center of the world.

    So you are wrong.

  3. Actually Cuba is THE “Communist utopia” (also North Korea) and Europe is “the moral center of the world”.

  4. I’ve got nothing for Cuba or North Korea, but I do like Europe. Lay off Europe. The winter Olympics were in Italy last time. That was just fine. And just as good, they will be in Canada in 2010.

  5. china is buying all our debt. they pirate the worlds goods. i was just in china and the locals told me that you can pirate anything but the olympics bears and shirts issued and sold by the chinese gov. if you are caught you will be killed like the health minister just was.
imagine if our free moral country dealt with polticians that were dishonest in the same way. No one would run for office.
