Houston-Area Bloggers Should Reconsider Support For Far Right-Wing “Democrat” Nick Lampson

U.S. House candidate Nick Lampson is running yet another ad placing him to the right of his Republican challenger. This new ad criticizes his opponent, Houston City Councilwoman Shelley Sekula-Gibbs, for voting to raise water and sewer rates. Houston needs all the revenue and infrastructure it can get. What would Lampson have us do? Dump our waste on the street like we are living in the 19th century?

Already Lampson has run a mean and appalling ad placing him to the right of the conservative Sekula-Gibbs on immigration. Liberal and progressive bloggers in the Houston Metro area have no doubt seen these awful ads.

Houston-area bloggers should reconsider backing Lampson. Is our support so easily taken for granted? I realize every seat counts in working towards a Democratic House majority. Yet even in these circumstances, Lampson is asking a lot of us. This is a race I think people would be justified leaving blank on their ballots.

  1. Duh! He’s running in TX-22 Tom DeLay’s distict. Of course he’s got to throw a few punches and feed some red meat to the crowds. Lampson’s got a solid Democratic record. He’s just trying to win in a very Red chunk of turf. Think about how scared witless the Wingnuts are and how having a Representative, even a Democrat, that “speaks their language”, is appealing to them. Horay for Texas and God bless the Democratic United States of America. Destroy the American Taliban!

  2. I think the willingness to call other people Talibin indicates part of the problem. I know I don’t like being called a traitor by people on the right. What is Lampson going to do if elected? Say he is sorry? Go back on what he has said? Are members of Houston City Council now going to be afraid to vote for needed water and sewage hikes because they will called tax-hikers? Is an immigrant-bashing Democrat the path to winning Hispanic votes? Hispanics are the growing demographic. Is Lampson’s campaign worth these things? I don’t mind more conservative Democrats. We have two main parties for 300 million people and the Democrats must be a big tent. But Lampson is simply shameless.

  3. I have already reached the same conclusion. After the wave of idiotic name-ID granting negative ads (I have scans on my site), the use of “liberal” as an insult, the chest-thumping on conservative issues, I’ve had enough. I cannot abide a campaign that runs AGAINST its base. I’m happy he’ll take the seat because he’s another Democrat vote for committe assignments and the like, but I cannot in good faith support him as an individual.

People are already talking about Gordon Quan in the 2008 primary.

  4. “The American Taliban”? Doc, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt that this is just rhetoric.

Of course, could you please explain what/who is the “American Taliban”?

Lampson is a piece of work, what’s next? An ad calling for the dismantling of the UN because they want to take away the 2nd Amendment?
