Texas Liberal

All People Matter

Everyone Counts In Galveston, Texas & In All Other Places As Well

Today I visited campaign headquarters of the Galveston County Democratic Party. A very nice lady was staffing the office. She was smart and knew politics.

Though I live in Houston, Harris County, Texas, I donated some money to the Galveston Democrats. Many Galveston residents have yard signs for Democratic candidates on their lawns. I wanted to help those good people out. I’ve already contributed to Harris County Democrats

At headquarters I found a great bumper sticker. It reads as follows—“Register & Vote—Everyone Counts In Galveston County”  What a perfect message!

While I’m a firm believer in partisanship, this bumper sticker was better for not suggesting a party preference. It was inclusive of all and struck to the heart of matter.  It asks us to “Register & Vote.” That’s right. That is what we all should do.

It then says—“Everyone Counts In Galveston County.” Right again. This is the heart of the liberal idea. Everyone counts. That’s why it says “All People Matter” at the top of this blog. Everyone does count in Galveston County, Texas. Everyone counts no matter where they are. All people matter.

  1. Is “everyone counts” solely a liberal idea?

  2. I don’t know. It is at the core of liberal thought as I understand it. It does often seem that some on the right do not feel that everybody counts. I can’t know what they are truly thinking. If they are to be known by deeds instead of words or thoughts—I can’t say very much that is positive. Though please note that I did say in the post that the bumper sticker was better for not saying what party to vote for.

  3. I did note that you commented on the non-affiliation of the bumper sticker.

I certainly cannot speak for the ‘right’ (whatever that is) but I can tell you that the Bible affirms that everyone does count. Forget the horrible things that people who call(ed) themselves followers of Christ have done in the throughout the centuries (after all, calling oneself a Christian, does not a Christian make), and please consider the following:

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:28

This is but one statement found in the biblical text which affirms that all men (and women) are created equal. It’s safe to say that the idea of ‘everyone counts’ is a bit older than liberalism. It’s inexplicable to me how people have used the Bible to oppress women and the least of these, but again I can’t speak for other people’s motivations or actions.

By the way, I do not affiliate myself with any political party and no GOP does definitely not stand for “God’s Own Party”.
