Comment Moderation Turned On

I’m sorry I’ve reached the point where I feel this is best, but I’ve turned on the comment moderation function for the blog. I’ve had to do so because I’ve been getting a number of terrible racist comments of late.

I favor an open approach to comments and I hope the good folks who comment here will take no offense. I’m sometimes away from the blog for a number of hours and there are just some things I can’t have up at my small corner of the internet.

Almost all spam to the blog is caught by the system set up by WordPress. I can’t say enough good about WordPress.

I will approve the great majority of comments I get here. So if you don’t see your comment right away, please just give me some time.

It’s only your proverbial few bad apples that have made me turn on the comment moderation after almost three years writing this blog. Hopefully, I’ll be able to turn it off soon enough.

Below—Mean nasty commentors—represented by bad apple—being eaten up by comment moderation— as represented by stinging bees.

Here are many facts about apples from the University of Illinois.

Here are facts about bees.

  1. This is a very difficult decision that we also had to make. It is a slippery and the hard thing is that, once you start moderating, people start accusing you of censoring all the time. Like you, we approve almost all comments (we banned just one commenter; he continues to try to comment, but now he uses our names. He must think I really stupid, that I will just approve a comment signed “Spacedark” that says nutty right-wing things I’d never say). But even some of the commenters who are allowed to say awful things now accuse us of censoring them. One commenter accused us of censoring him because one of his comments disappeared and one showed up twice. I don’t even know how I would make this happen; he obviously made the mistake himself.

Anyway, it is a difficult thing to have to do, but that is the state of online discourse at this point.

  2. Oops. “It is a slippery slope” and “he must think I’m really stupid”

  3. I turned on my comment moderation 6 months after I started my blog. Those who think that freedom of speech means abuse are a little crazy I think. They need to be deleted.

  4. Spacedark—Yeah, “online discourse” is the term you use. Is that like how Ghandi said that western civilization would be a “good idea.” As in it would be nice if it really did exist.

Nita–Many people are crazy online both in your India and over here as well.

Thanks for these comments from my respected fellow bloggers.

  5. i am not crazy about this but i support you and understand that you dont want to get a call or have someone read a comment that is hateful and not needed. the platform of all people matter is respectful in so many ways. I try to keep my comments clean as i can, i do use f bombs ect.. when i feel i need to or want to express my thoughts clearly. you must be careful as you know in how you choose to use this tool.
